Stina!

This article is amazing. I so appreciate you delving into the politics and culture with such nuance and humiity. El Salvador is high on my list of places to visit. I have family from El Salvador that moved to the US during the civil war. I have not had the courage to visit before but think more about it, especially with crime more under control. Maria's story feels unreal. How meaningful to hear personal stories. Nothing is ever black and white, and as she says we will see what happens.

Will definitely check out your recommendations when the time comes. I can see why my family member is so proud of her home country 💓

Great writing and photos. Thanks for keeping us wise and inspired over here! Miss you!!

Oh wow I really loved this piece, Stina! Thanks for sharing your experience in El Salvador. Maria's story is truly heartbreaking, and her witness also shows the nuance of this topic. Is the country safer, in general? It looks like yes. Are things still complicated? Probably yes. But, if women can go to work and even walk alone at night, then this does look like progress.

I was in Guatemala around this time two years ago (oh, the volcanoes!!) and I really regret not going to its neighbouring country. But reading this post took me there, for a moment.

Lovely stuff, Stina. I was there in 2012. I remember showing the hostel owner my photos of the centre of San Salvador and she was shocked that I'd been there and nothing had happened to me.

That church is great. It reminds me of a similar one in Monrovia, Liberia. I sat down for coffee outside it, but they didn't have coffee, only "romcafe" which turned out to be coffee flavoured rum. At 10am. They then asked me to join their football team and the owner was very keen on me marrying his (completely disinterested) eighteen-year-old daughter.

Anyway, thanks for bringing back some memories!

I didn't know anything about El Salvador before this -- Bitcoin beach? Self-proclaimed cool dictators? Also you must be one of the hippest looking "grannies" around. Holy moly. I guess you can only laugh right? But really, thanks for these awesome guides. The real deal.

Great article Stina. El Salvador sounds really interesting despite the horrific history it carries. Fabulous colourful photos as usual. I felt I was there with you. 😃 🙂
